THE BASICS
navigationhot is the default sort setting, which displays the hottest links. once you've taken the 5 seconds necessary to register in that box in the upper-right tab, the following will appear: recommended recommends fresh links to you based on the filter you train with your votes.
you must register to vote, but it's quite painless (we only require a username and a password) and can be done in that aforementioned box on the upper right. registering lets us recommend you personally relevant links, because every vote trains the system what kind of items you like. if you'd like to be able to retrieve your password, make sure to enter an email address in your preferences section.
on votehandmade your vote means, "I found this interesting," not "This should go on the front page."
once registered, you can vote all links on votehandmade up or down based on whether you liked or disliked them. Your votes train a filter, so vote up links you liked and vote down links you disliked. Our hope is that instead of just reading a list of links the community thinks should be on the front page, you'll also be reading a list personalized for you (filtered for quality by the entire votehandmade, but filtered for relevance by you). Find these personalized links in your recommended section. Upon voting, the highlighted score will have changed +1 or -1 depending on your vote up or down, respectively. Regardless of individual karmas, all votes affect submission scores equally.
As a general rule, vote up what you liked (and want to see more of) and vote down what you disliked (and don't want to see similar things in the future) - there's really not much else to it.
submitting linksOnce registered, you'll be able to submit links and earn karma. Anything that is handmade can be submitted to votehandmade. Well, almost anything. We'd like votehandmade to be the source for everything that's new in handmade on the web: if it's linkable, it's submittable. Please post in the appropriate ballot, and please only post to one ballot per link. Mature items should be posted in the mature ballot only.. Clicking on the submit link will take you to this form:
url: enter the web address of what you want to submit. (e.g. if you are submitting an item on artfire it would look something like http://www.artfire.com/modules.php?name=ViewListing&product_id=1234567) If you're submitting a tidbit for which you do not have a link type "self" (without the quotes) instead of a URL. title: enter a thoughtful headline here, because skillful naming is crucial to getting the attention of your peers. If you don't enter one in, clicking the submit button will generate one automatically, which generally is a good place to start. (!) tip for successful submissions
Help us fight spam by clicking on the report button beneath each headline to flag a submission as spam. We use this data to filter out the garbage that sometimes clogs the new page, your reports/downvotes are very helpful in this process.
Access the comments of a link by clicking on the comments button beneath each headline. You can comment on an existing comment, or on the item itself.
Once you're logged in, you'll notice a Clicking on it will send you to your inbox. From here you can select compose to prepare your own message. Select sent to relive all those old messages you sent to your friends.
Once you've registered and logged in, you'll see your username (#) in the upper-right corner of the screen (the (#) is your karma score). Click on your username or any other username and you'll be taken to their profile page. Along with some personal stats, you'll find tabs for the following sections: overview an overview of the user's comments and submissions comments the user's comment history submitted all the links submitted by the user the following sections will not be visible to other users unless you've made them public in your preferences section
liked all the links a user "liked" with a vote up hidden all the links a user has hidden (you can also unhide sites here)
karmaThe formula for karma is constantly evolving. Presently, the easiest (and most effective) way to gain karma is by making good submissions: items that other people want to read and will subsequently become popular. Those user who best understand what people want to be reading about will be the best rewarded. Once you've registered and logged in, you'll see your username (#) in the upper-right corner of the screen (the (#) is your karma score). Karma on votehandmade is not the same as Karma on Artfire.com but the basic idea is similar. It allows you to tell at a glance if a poster is legit, new, established or a potential spammer (and vice versa). It is also affects things such as how often you can post and comment.
